Most foot pain is the result of a faulty relationship between the bones and muscles of the foot. Even the slightest malalignment of the bones and muscles can cause pain and discomfort. Malalignment can result from a number of problems, such as overpronation, flat feet, persistent ankle sprains, bunions, painful callus lesions, etc. Custom prescription orthotics are used in order to eliminate or control these problems. Custom orthotics are not a simple arch support. They are made from neutral position corrective plaster of Paris casts of the feet. Your doctor will hold your foot in the corrected position when the impression is being taken. This process is based on scientific principles and research into the function of the foot, however there is an artistic element to obtaining an appropriate cast. We believe that obtaining a plaster model of the foot is the best way to capture both the scientific and artistic elements of obtaining a custom impression of your foot. The orthotics are made specifically for your feet. Once the orthotics are slipped inside your shoes, they should fit comfortably to your foot. After undergoing a short adjustment period, you should not be overly aware that they are there.
How do they work? As your foot rests on the orthotic it is gently and consistently directed into the corrected position for walking, running, and standing. It is applying a bracing alignment to your foot.
How long will I have to wear them? This would depend upon the foot problem that is being cared for, however you will probably want to wear them forever. They work on the same principle as eyeglasses. A doctor may prescribe eyeglasses for you, but they do not necessarily cure your vision problems. Likewise, orthotics modify the function of your foot as you continue to wear them. In some young patients, the early use of custom orthotics before the bones are fully developed may actually correct the foot problem or at least they can ensure the problem does not develop further. Your feet are the foundation for your entire body and consistently wearing a foot orthotic is good practice for overall foot and lower extremity health.
